Gitryin has opened pre-orders for Nexus, a 140W desktop charging station with four retractable USB-C cables built directly into the unit, giving you a way to charge several devices without keeping a collection of loose cables stretched across your desk. A fifth USB-C port takes your own cable, and you also get three adapters that cover Lightning, Micro-USB, and USB-A devices like older earbuds or an aging e-reader. The whole setup is currently available for $89.99 as part of an early-access offer running through Oct. 14, before the price increases to $109.99 on Oct. 15. From then through Nov. 30, you can use the code NexusPR10 to take $10 off orders of $100 or more, effectively bringing the Nexus down to $99.99, with units expected to begin shipping Nov. 15.
As useful as having five charging connections may be, the Nexus’s 140W of power is shared—a single compatible device can draw up to the full 140W, while connecting two devices divides the available power to as much as 65W apiece. With three devices plugged in, the split becomes 100W, 18W, and 18W, and filling all five connections gives you up to 65W from the primary connection and 18W from each of the other four. Gitryin’s testing at the full 140W output saw a 16-inch MacBook Pro reach 50% in 25 minutes and a full charge in one hour and 31 minutes, though actual speeds will vary depending on your device, battery level, and charging conditions.
That combination of laptop-level power and support for several smaller devices makes the Nexus particularly suited to a desk or nightstand where most of your charging happens in one place, and the retractable cables help keep that setup from becoming cluttered—each one extends up to 31.5 inches and locks at multiple lengths, while the 30.2-ounce weighted base and non-slip strips help keep the station planted as you pull a cable out. The tradeoff is portability: At roughly 4.3 by 3.5 by 4.5 inches and nearly two pounds, it’s much better suited to staying on a desk or nightstand than traveling with you.
